NYFE Summary

The Theater Guild built this as a home for its subscription company. Its plans included classrooms, studios and a library alongside the auditorium. The organization brought actors, writers, designers and other supporters together to produce plays.

The building later operated under the ANTA and Virginia names. In 2005 it was renamed for August Wilson, becoming the first Broadway theater named for a Black playwright. Small balconies, shuttered windows and a tiled roof give the front the appearance of an Italian villa.
