NYFE Summary

Czech and Slovak immigrants raised money for a gathering place as their community moved uptown near the cigar factories that employed many of them. The hall hosted language classes, meals and meetings. During World War I it supported the movement for an independent Czechoslovakia.

Pairs of columns frame the entrance, and an arcade rises above carved lion heads. After a major restoration, the building reopened in 2008. The Czech Center now presents exhibitions and films here alongside the community organizations that still use the hall.
