NYFE Summary

The fence once enclosed an equestrian statue of King George III. On July 9, 1776, soldiers and civilians pulled the statue down after the Declaration of Independence was read to troops in New York. They also damaged the fence and broke off the ornaments on its posts.

The ironwork survived another disruption when subway construction required its removal in 1914. It was stored in Central Park, where much of it was later found and returned to Bowling Green.
