NYFE Summary

The garden was founded as Brooklyn’s streets and buildings spread across open land. Its early Native Flora Garden focused on local plants. A children’s gardening program began in 1914, giving city children a place to grow food.

Takeo Shiota designed the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden, which opened the following year. Other areas explore rock gardens, roses and plants adapted to different habitats. A later water-conservation project connects ponds and a brook so that water can circulate through the grounds.
