NYFE Summary

The museum began as the Brooklyn Apprentices’ Library in 1823. Its collecting later expanded into art and natural history, before most of the natural science collection was dispersed. Today the art collections range from ancient Egyptian objects to contemporary work. The museum also publishes research on how objects changed owners, including gaps in their histories and acquisitions made under colonial rule.

The original building plan was three times the size of what was completed. Of four planned glass-roofed courts, only one was built. That third-floor court retains its glass-tile floor beneath a protective floor installed during restoration.
