NYFE Summary

Students seeking a home for Italian books and cultural activities helped start the project. Italian-American builders, workers and donors joined the fundraising effort, while Columbia provided the site. The house became a place for teaching, lectures, music and research.

A stone base supports tall windows on the principal floor, giving the front the appearance of an Italian palace. Inside, the academy's entry gallery presents the history of Italian studies at Columbia, beginning with Lorenzo Da Ponte, who wrote librettos for Mozart.
