NYFE Summary

The bank began as the German Savings Bank in rented space at Cooper Union. Its later move to the Upper West Side reflected the growth of neighborhoods around Broadway and the elevated railway. The name changed during World War I.

The building fills an irregular site beside Verdi Square. Deep joints in the limestone walls and large arched windows give its lower floors a heavy appearance. Decorative ironwork by Samuel Yellin includes small animal heads.
