NYFE Summary

James Baldwin used an apartment here as his New York base while spending much of his time in France. His mother, sisters and other relatives lived in the same building. Visitors included Maya Angelou, Miles Davis and Toni Morrison, who briefly lived here with her sons.

The family’s life here helped inspire Baldwin’s children’s book Little Man, Little Man. The white-brick street frontage and sunken entrance survive from his years of ownership.
