NYFE Summary

The branch first served a largely Jewish immigrant neighborhood, where readers borrowed history, literature and language books. As Chinatown grew, Chinese-language books became part of its work. NYPL has offered a circulating Chinese-language collection here since 1911.

Six large columns frame the upper windows. A carved open book and shield top the front, while bronze lanterns flank the entrance. These details marked the library as a public building among the surrounding brick tenements.
