NYFE Summary

A saddlery business commissioned this store. Later textile firms occupied it as the surrounding streets became a center for dry goods and cloth merchants.

Its slender columns and double-height arches were compared to candles made from sperm-whale oil. This is why historians call the design a “sperm-candle” front. The same iron pattern turns the corner for one bay on Franklin Place.
