NYFE Summary

Dry-goods merchants leased this site as Leonard Street changed from a residential block into a commercial district. An early plaque credited the facade’s constructor with pioneering iron buildings.

Slender columns span two floors at a time, ending in arches above the windows. Rope patterns, leaves, lions’ heads and small human faces fill the ironwork. These fine details would have been harder and more costly to carve in stone.
