NYFE Summary
A soap company commissioned this store after Thomas Street was extended through the former grounds of New York Hospital. The company’s factories were elsewhere; this building belonged to its commercial operations.
Rows of arches become smaller toward the roof. Alternating light and dark stone, diagonal brickwork and a round opening in the gable create patterns across the narrow front. The design reflects the influence of writer John Ruskin’s ideas about Venetian architecture.
