NYFE Summary

Andrew and Louise Carnegie’s home included machinery more often associated with a large commercial building. It had a steel frame, an elevator and a system for heating and cooling. A miniature railway in the cellar carried coal to the boilers. Andrew Carnegie also used his office here to direct gifts that funded libraries.

The Smithsonian opened its design museum in the house in 1976. The former residence and garden are now part of a visit alongside the exhibitions. Some galleries close during exhibition changes, so the museum’s current floor information matters when choosing which displays to see.
