NYFE Summary
The Great Hall became a meeting place for political debate as well as education. Abraham Lincoln spoke here before becoming president. Other meetings addressed workers’ rights and women’s voting rights, and the hall was part of the early history of the NAACP.
Peter Cooper also planned for changes in building technology. He required a round shaft that could later hold an elevator. The Foundation Building still belongs to a school of art, architecture and engineering. Public events and exhibitions provide opportunities to visit; their listings specify the location and entry arrangements.
