NYFE Summary

Water from the Old Croton Aqueduct crossed Manhattan Valley in iron pipes before continuing south through a masonry channel. This gatehouse replaced an older structure that stood in the street and obstructed traffic. Its equipment helped control that crossing.

Rough granite walls, round-arched windows and a slate roof give the small utility building a substantial presence. It remained in use after the Old Croton Aqueduct stopped carrying city drinking water in 1955. Its gatehouse service ended in 1990.
