NYFE Summary
After fleeing the British occupation during the Revolution, the Dyckman family returned to a destroyed home and damaged farmland. They rebuilt at a new location beside Broadway. Their farm eventually stretched across northern Manhattan between the rivers.
The household’s history includes enslaved and free Black residents as well as the Dyckman family. The museum identifies a bedroom above the summer kitchen as a likely living space for enslaved people and other workers. Its account of separate summer and winter kitchens also explains the work of running the household: summer cooking was moved outside the main house to reduce heat.
