NYFE Summary

The Cloisters combines medieval architectural pieces brought from Europe with a modern museum building. It does not reproduce one particular monastery. Doorways, columns and enclosed gardens provide settings for medieval sculpture, stained glass, manuscripts and tapestries, including the Unicorn Tapestries.

In the Cuxa cloister, carved capitals include imaginary creatures among the pink marble columns. The gardens also have a historical purpose. Their planting draws on medieval books and images, including herbs once used for food, medicine and making art. The plants help explain materials and practices represented in the galleries.
