NYFE Summary

Edgar Allan Poe rented this cottage with his wife, Virginia, and his mother-in-law, Maria Clemm. Virginia died here in 1847. Poe remained until shortly before his own death two years later. He wrote Eureka here, a book-length work about the nature of the universe.

The cottage is now a museum run by the Bronx County Historical Society. Its interpretation covers Poe’s writing and the family’s years in what was then a rural part of Fordham. The society also holds readings and other literary programs connected with Poe’s work.
