NYFE Summary

George Washington took his first presidential oath at an earlier building on this site. That building also housed the first Congress under the Constitution, which proposed the Bill of Rights. It was demolished in 1812, so the structure visitors see today is not the one used for the inauguration.

The present building first collected customs duties, then served as a federal Sub-Treasury. Its vaults held gold and silver before that work moved elsewhere. National Park Service exhibitions explain the founding-era events and the later building’s role.
