NYFE Summary

The Loew’s chain built a large neighborhood movie house here during the growth of Hollywood’s studio system. Its narrow Canal Street lobby led to an auditorium facing Ludlow Street. The chain’s founder, Marcus Loew, had grown up on the Lower East Side.

Terra cotta covers the entrance building. Griffons, eagles and sea creatures crowd the upper ornament. Dark panels imitate windows while hiding what was originally a room for ventilation equipment.
