NYFE Summary

Darius Ogden Mills commissioned the hotel to offer lower-cost lodgings for single working men. Each of its original 1,885 small bedrooms had a window facing a street or a light court.

The original plan placed two courtyard units around a central elevator hall. Rows of repeated windows reflect that arrangement of small rooms. Pale stone, brick and a projecting roof cornice give the large block a consistent street front.
