NYFE Summary

Immigrants from the former Ottoman province of Syria made lower Washington Street a center of commerce and community life. Many came from what is now Lebanon. A Melkite Catholic parish moved into this former boardinghouse and gave it a new church front.

White terra cotta covers the narrow facade, with pointed arches and a colored relief of St. George and the dragon. The building survived after much of the surrounding immigrant neighborhood disappeared.
