NYFE Summary

Fort Tompkins formed the upper part of the defenses at the Narrows. It supported the waterfront fort below, now known as Battery Weed. When Fort Tompkins was rebuilt, sandstone from the earlier fort was reused in the outer wall of its defensive ditch.

The military site changed uses as weapons and defense needs changed. It later housed the Army’s Chaplain School before becoming part of Gateway National Recreation Area. Today the grounds, overlook and visitor center help explain the harbor defenses. Check National Park Service tour listings if you want to see inside the fort.
