NYFE Summary

New York craftsmen founded the society to support their trades and education. It opened a free school and an apprentices’ library in 1820. The society later moved into this former private boys’ school, with Andrew Carnegie helping fund its expansion.

The library continues to hold books, archives and public lectures. The building also houses the John M. Mossman Lock Collection and the Horological Society of New York’s research library and exhibits. Together they explore the skills behind everyday objects, from locks and keys to watches.
