NYFE Summary
Before it became the mayor’s residence, Gracie Mansion had several public uses. The city took ownership after unpaid taxes and incorporated the property into a park. The house served as a concession stand and restrooms, then became the first home of the Museum of the City of New York.
Fiorello La Guardia moved here in 1942, establishing its role as the mayoral residence during the Second World War. A later wing added space for official events while separating them from family rooms.
