NYFE Summary

A proposed office tower once threatened to remove the terminal’s main waiting room and part of its concourse. Preservation campaigners, including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, opposed the changes. After the building was saved, a major restoration repaired its fabric and cleaned the darkened ceiling.

The Main Concourse ceiling contains constellations and thousands of stars. Oak leaves and acorns appear on fixtures and other details as symbols of the Vanderbilt family, which financed the terminal. In the tiled Whispering Gallery, sound carries between opposite corners. These features can be seen during a visit to the working terminal.
