NYFE Summary
The gateway’s sculpture was planned around death and resurrection. Green-Wood’s archive records a commission to John Moffit for four groups, including Christ’s entombment, the resurrection and the raising of Lazarus. Moffit first made smaller clay models for approval before carving the figures in stone.
Beyond the entrance, visitors can follow cemetery maps or a mobile guide to graves, monuments and the landscape. Green-Wood remains an active cemetery, so funeral services and people visiting graves take priority. Its rules ask visitors to leave monuments untouched and avoid leaning on them.
