NYFE Summary

The park was created to bring open space and recreation into a neighborhood crowded with tenements. Its planners gave the gymnasium and bathing facilities a carefully decorated pavilion, rather than a plain service building.

A large entrance arch rises above the smaller arched windows on either side. Carved lions' heads look out between the windows. The pavilion survives from the original formal park plan, while the later swimming pool represents another stage of the park's history.
