NYFE Summary

Water arriving through the New Croton Aqueduct passed through chambers and gates here before entering pipes for Central Park and northern Manhattan. The elevated site helped water flow by gravity.

Rough brownstone walls, pale granite arches and an octagonal tower gave this utility building the appearance of a small fortress. An adaptation of its chambers created performance and rehearsal spaces. Harlem Stage opened the Gatehouse in 2007.
