NYFE Summary

The extra width of John Street here marks the old Burling Slip, a harbor inlet filled in during the nineteenth century. This former store building faced that waterside commercial space. Its setting helps explain how the neighborhood developed around shipping.

The broad granite front uses repeated windows and little ornament. It is one of the few surviving New York commercial buildings with a granite front from this period. The open space in front makes the regular pattern easier to see.
