NYFE Summary

The hotel became a meeting place for Black performers, writers and political figures after it began accepting Black guests in 1940. Malcolm X based the Organization of Afro-American Unity here. Fidel Castro's stay during the United Nations meeting in 1960 brought international attention to the building.

White terra-cotta walls and large, curved gables make the former hotel easy to identify above the surrounding shops. Its exterior recalls the period when Harlem's hotels served both visitors and neighborhood organizations.
