NYFE Summary

Barbara Heck and Philip Embury helped start a Methodist society in colonial New York. The congregation built an early chapel on this site, followed by two later church buildings. Its museum tells that history through the people who worshipped and organized here.

The story also includes James Varick and other Black members who left when church activities became segregated. They founded what became the AME Zion Church. The small church facade has tall arched windows beneath a broad triangular gable.
