The Knox Hat Company followed fashionable shops north from lower Manhattan. This building combined a store with the company’s headquarters; its manufacturing plant stood in Brooklyn.
Carved faces and large brackets decorate the stone front. High above the street, elaborate dormers break through a steep roof crowned with metal cresting. The long West 40th Street side shows how the design wraps around the corner opposite the library.
