NYFE Summary

Library director John Shaw Billings placed the main reading room above the book stacks, elevated above the surrounding streets. Tall windows light the room, and cloud murals decorate its ceiling. Materials here are generally consulted on site rather than borrowed to take home.

The visitor center explains the building through a model showing its reading rooms and storage spaces. The Treasures exhibition in Gottesman Hall displays material from across thousands of years of written history. Some reading rooms are reserved for research or require an appointment, so exhibition access does not include every workspace.
