NYFE Summary

Lever Brothers commissioned this headquarters for its household-products business. The narrow glass tower rises above a low horizontal base, leaving space at ground level for a courtyard. Its nearly continuous glass surface and open base offered a different model from the stepped masonry towers that preceded it.

The courtyard, plaza and lobby are also used for public art. The building’s original display cases once promoted the company’s products. Current exhibitions use those cases and the surrounding spaces to connect art with the building.
