NYFE Summary
The city mixed asphalt here for its streets. A waterfront location allowed raw materials to arrive by boat, reducing the need for truck deliveries. Production ended in 1968, and residents later campaigned to save the plant.
A series of concrete arches forms the tall parabolic mixing house. The former industrial shell became the Murphy Center, part of Asphalt Green’s recreation complex, in 1984. It is a different building from the neighboring AquaCenter.
