NYFE Summary

Eastern European Jewish immigrants established this synagogue as a home for their growing congregation. Membership later fell as families moved away and immigration restrictions reduced new arrivals. By the 1940s, worship had moved to the downstairs chapel. The main sanctuary deteriorated while the smaller congregation continued to use the building.

Restorers kept evidence of that history. Worn grooves in the wooden floor mark where people stood and swayed in prayer. Exposed plaster in the balcony shows the building's years of neglect. The blue east window by Kiki Smith and Deborah Gans is a modern addition to the restored sanctuary.
