NYFE Summary

Jack Tchen and Charlie Lai started the New York Chinatown History Project in 1980. They wanted to preserve the history of a changing neighborhood. That project grew into a museum about Chinese American life.

The core exhibition follows migration, work and family life, including the effects of the Chinese Exclusion Act. A recreated general store brings together salvaged objects from shops in New York, Boston and Los Angeles. It shows how these businesses also served as post offices, travel agencies and places to gather.
