NYFE Summary
A former private mansion became this museum in 2001. Industrialist William Starr Miller commissioned the house, which later housed the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. Art dealer Serge Sabarsky and collector Ronald S. Lauder bought it for a museum devoted to German and Austrian art.
The collection places paintings by artists such as Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele alongside furniture and other design objects. It examines connections between fine and decorative arts in Vienna around 1900 and German movements including Expressionism and the Bauhaus. The carved stone entrance can be seen from the sidewalk.
