NYFE Summary

Landfill and a seawall connected Hunter Island to the mainland to make this beach. Federal public-works funding supported a large waterfront recreation project during the Great Depression. The curved promenade follows the sand with hexagonal paving and railings designed with a nautical theme.

Two bathhouse colonnades spread outward from a raised terrace. The building combines limestone, brick and concrete with tile and terrazzo finishes. A visitor can follow the promenade's curve and look across Long Island Sound, then examine how the terraces and stairs join the bathhouse to the shore.
