NYFE Summary

The Bartow family’s estate became part of Pelham Bay Park when the city acquired the property. The International Garden Club later leased the house and restored it. The club also commissioned the terraced formal garden. That use helped the house survive while other mansions in the park were demolished.

Guided tours cover the mansion and carriage house. The furnished rooms contain period furniture and decorative arts; the carriage house explains another part of the estate’s daily work. Visitors can also explore the gardens and grounds independently. The mansion has stairs between its floors and no elevator.
