NYFE Summary

Thousands of American prisoners died aboard British prison ships during the Revolutionary War. The ships were used when land prisons became overcrowded, and many were moored in Wallabout Bay. The memorial honors those who died; a crypt beneath it holds remains recovered and reburied after the war.

A broad granite staircase leads to the plaza and its tall column, topped by a bronze urn. The column is 149 feet high. Sculptor Adolph Weinman designed the urn above it.
