NYFE Summary

The branch grew from a collection across the street at the Educational Alliance. Yiddish books, English classes and children’s storytelling connected it to the surrounding immigrant community. Writers Nella Larsen and Pura Belpré worked in the children’s room before later generations of readers brought new languages and programs.

Arched openings and a deeply lined stone base frame the street-level rooms. Above the cornice, stone posts and a copper railing survive from an outdoor rooftop reading room. The roof once used a canvas awning to shelter readers.
