NYFE Summary
This former church is an early surviving building of Manhattan’s Catholic community. Its front adapts the shape of a classical temple to a narrow city lot. Stairways were enclosed on either side of the recessed porch, with separate doors facing the street.
Two columns stand beneath the broad triangular pediment. The church’s ornament resembles details published in architectural pattern books used by American builders. The contrast between the stone side walls and the formal entrance is visible from the sidewalk.
