NYFE Summary

The church stands on part of Peter Stuyvesant’s former farm. He built an earlier family chapel here and was buried beneath it. The present building faces an older rural route, which explains its angle to the surrounding street grid.

Later congregations made the church a home for dance, poetry and experimental theater. Martha Graham and Ruth St. Denis performed in the sanctuary. The Poetry Project and Danspace Project continue the site’s connection to the arts.
