NYFE Summary

This was New York's Catholic cathedral before the larger church on Fifth Avenue took over that role. Its surrounding brick wall had a practical purpose: trustees built it amid anti-Catholic threats in the 1830s. The parish later served successive Irish, Italian, Black and Asian communities. After a major fire in 1866, the church was rebuilt within its surviving walls.

The choir loft contains a large pipe organ made by Henry Erben's nearby workshop. Delivered by horse-drawn cart, it was assembled inside the church. Its surviving pipes and mechanism preserve the work of a New York organ builder.
