NYFE Summary

Actor, director and producer Henry Miller commissioned this house for his own productions. He supported American plays and playwrights at a time when large booking organizations controlled much of the theater business. The red-brick front carries urns, round reliefs of music and drama, and his name above the windows.

Roundabout staged Cabaret here in 1998, but an accident at a neighboring construction site forced the show to move to Studio 54. The theater reopened in 2009 and took Stephen Sondheim’s name the following year, honoring the composer and lyricist’s eightieth birthday.
