NYFE Summary
This small building supported the island’s charity hospital with laboratory examinations, autopsies and medical research. The first floor held specimen rooms and a mortuary. More detailed experiments took place upstairs, where later alterations added library and museum space.
Rough gray stone contrasts with orange brick around the large arched windows. A low wing projects from the taller main block. These different heights make the former laboratory easy to distinguish from the nearby Smallpox Hospital ruins.
