NYFE Summary

The Met grew around its first building in Central Park. Part of that earlier exterior can still be seen inside the Robert Lehman Wing, where later galleries enclosed it. The museum's additions made room for collections ranging from paintings and armor to complete historic interiors.

The Temple of Dendur is one example. Egypt gave the temple to the United States after an international effort saved Nubian monuments threatened by the Aswan High Dam. Its carvings show the Roman emperor Augustus dressed as a pharaoh. Papyrus-shaped columns and carved water plants represent the natural world along the Nile.
