NYFE Summary

Pierpont Morgan collected rare books and manuscripts in a private library beside his home. His son turned it into a public institution in 1924. The collection now also includes drawings, music manuscripts and ancient seals. Exhibitions place these objects alongside the rooms built to hold Morgan's collection.

The East Room has three tiers of bookcases, with stairs hidden behind them. In the West Room, Morgan met bankers during the financial panic of 1907. A steel-lined vault beside the fireplace once protected his manuscripts. These rooms show how the library served both his collecting and his business life.
